With the release of her second collection of essays, Everything's Trash But It's Okay, the podcast host, comedian, host of 2 Dope Queensand generally badass multi-hyphenate is in active protest against the sliding scale of trash that is our current cultural and political moment.

"It’s just a really scary time right now, and at the same time I’ve been really inspired by a lot of the sort of action I've been seeing, whether it’s online or in real life with marches or organizations getting involved," Robinson said on the phone with Mashable. "Hopefully the book is sort of reflective of that I think, like people will feel that way like yes things are trash, but we also have light."

In Everything's Trash, Robinson owns up to her own less-than-ideal moments (making a ringtone of just the "Somebody" in "All Star" by Smash Mouth, Googling David Bowie's penis at...an inopportune time) and celebrates victories against trash (career success! Eating veggies before they rot in your fridge!). She also uses her innate humor and warmth to double down on hard facts, like sexism in Hollywood and problems with white feminism.

"Too often, whether it’s #MeToo, #TimesUp, any movement there tends to be queer women and women of color are kind of pushed to the side and not heard and then white women are seen as the symbol or the hero," Robinson said. "The onus is on a lot of the self-identifying white feminists to check their privilege, to check their references, to make sure they’re passing the mic to other people."

A whole chapter of Everything's Trashis devoted to the trappings of white feminism. Robinson herself tries to remain constantly cognizant of checking privilege, aware that her platform, while she calls it small, is not insignificant.

"I have such a lucky life," she says. "I've worked really hard, but a lot of things had to happen in my life for me to get to this point. For me it’s kind of like breathing air to then like turn around and be like ‘All right, how can I give back?’ How can I participate and how can I make things better?"

In the book, she describes encounters with two major role models of charitability and social awareness: Oprah and Bono. On the phone, she shares one more: Her brother, who's running for state representative in Ohio.

"He has such a big, open heart, and to see him throw his hat in the ring in terms of politics and be like ‘I have some really good ideas,’ and the fact that he’s speaking out about LGBTQ+ issues..." she says. "It’s just really cool to have someone in your family, in your immediate family especially, who is such a prime example of how we can live an honorable and life-changing life for other people."

Her brother reminds Robinson that people are never done learning ("He would just read these long, massive biographies about like Andrew Jackson or Teddy Roosevelt and I’d be like 'mm, pass, I’m gonna watch Moesha’"), and that politics – if not on the national level – can still be positive and focused.

"Politics in a lot of ways has become so ugly because there is so much like ‘Well this person is an idiot,’ or ‘This person said this,’ or ‘I’m gonna make this person seem awful,’ and it’s like okay, fine, but what are youdoing," she says. "I like him taking that approach."

The trick with trash is fighting back, Robinson says.

"When things get really terrible or really tricky...I think we should think of the opposite and think what shouldhappen," she says. "You can be upset, but then you can be like 'All right, I'm gonna freaking level up, and I'm not gonna let this get to me.'"

It's a lot of work, and she knows it. Overhauling social justice means unpacking race, gender, and class. Overhauling politics requires looking at why and how people vote. Dealing with sexism requires new tools to socialize men and women and how they interact.

"Guys have to check each other instead of being like, ‘Well I’m a good guy because I don’t sexually harass or assault women,’ but if you’re complicit or if you know the guy who behaved badly and you don't do anything about it...I just don’t care about whether or not you’re a good guy, I just want the bull shit to stop."

Whenever she's bogged down by the world's raging trash fire, Robinson pushes herself to look for that light.

"There’s so many people who are really wanting to do something good and something positive," she says. "And if we can just remember those people and stay in contact with those people I think the trash moment that we’re living in won’t feel so oppressive and like the only thing that’s happening."

Robinson happens to be one of those people. That she has met her idols and they appreciate her work is no small endorsement – though she does know which other appreciative audience she'd take if she had the option.

"Maybe the Obamas as a family, if they start a book club," she says. "That would be cute, if they started a book club and it was just about my book...like, Barack has to make all the snacks while Michelle, Sasha and Malia can just chill. Like I think that’s fair."
